Google Business Profile suspended? Here is the appeal that works

Most suspensions come from one of nine causes, and the appeal fails when it does not name the cause. Includes the reinstatement request wording and the evidence checklist Google actually wants.

A suspended Google Business Profile is almost always suspended for a specific, findable reason, and Google will not tell you which one. The appeal succeeds when you identify the cause, fix it before appealing, and submit evidence proving the business is real at the address on file. Appealing without fixing the cause fails, and each failed appeal makes the next one harder.

Soft suspension or hard suspension?

These are different problems and the fix is different.

Soft suspension. Your profile is still on Google Maps, customers can still find you, but you have lost management access and the profile shows as unverified in your dashboard. Usually triggered by an edit to a core field.

Hard suspension. The profile is gone from Maps and Search entirely. Search your business name in an incognito window. If nothing appears, this is a hard suspension.

Check which one you have before doing anything else. A soft suspension is often fixed by reverifying. A hard suspension needs a full reinstatement request.

What causes a Google Business Profile suspension?

In rough order of how often each one is the actual culprit:

  1. Keyword stuffing the business name. "Baytown Roofing" is fine. "Baytown Roofing | Best Roof Repair Near Me" is not. Your profile name must be the real world name on your signage, and nothing else. This is the single most common cause.
  2. Address problems. A virtual office, a coworking desk, a mailbox store, or a PO box used as a storefront address. Also a residential address on a profile that is set up as a storefront rather than a service area business.
  3. Service area business showing an address. If you go to customers, your address must be hidden. Showing it invites a suspension.
  4. Multiple profiles at one address. Two businesses at the same suite number, or the same business created twice.
  5. Category mismatch. A category that does not match what the business actually does, usually added to chase rankings.
  6. A high risk category. Locksmiths, garage door services, addiction treatment, and similar verticals get scrutinized far harder because of historical spam.
  7. Website or phone mismatch. The number or domain on the profile does not appear anywhere on the site it points to.
  8. Editing several core fields at once. Changing name, address, and category in one session looks like a hijack. Change one thing, wait, change the next.
  9. A prohibited business model. Lead generation profiles, or a brand with no physical presence in the market.

Go through that list honestly before you appeal. If you cannot find your cause, look at what changed in the two weeks before the suspension. Something did.

Fix the cause before you appeal

This is the step people skip and it is why appeals fail. If your name has keywords in it, change the name to the real one first. If you are a service area business with a visible address, hide the address first. Then appeal.

Appealing a profile that still violates the policy that got it suspended is asking a reviewer to approve a violation they can see on screen.

How do you submit a reinstatement request?

  1. Sign in to the Google account that manages the profile.
  2. Open the Google Business Profile help site and find the reinstatement request form.
  3. Select the affected profile.
  4. Confirm you have fixed the issue.
  5. Attach evidence and submit.

You get one profile per request. If you manage many, submit them separately and expect different outcomes.

What evidence does Google actually want?

Google is answering one question: does this business really operate at this address? Give it proof that a stranger could verify.

Strong, include all you have:
[ ] Business license or registration showing the business name and address
[ ] Utility bill in the business name at that address, last 3 months
[ ] Photo of exterior signage with the business name, wide enough to
show the building and street context
[ ] Photo of the storefront from the street, showing the door number
[ ] Lease, deed, or rental agreement for the address
[ ] Business insurance certificate showing the address

Useful for a service area business:
[ ] Photos of branded vehicles, both sides, plate visible
[ ] Photos of branded uniforms or equipment
[ ] Invoices to customers in the claimed service area, redacted

Weak, do not bother:
[ ] Screenshots of your own website
  [ ] Social media profiles
[ ] Anything you could have made in ten minutes

Photos should be original and taken by you. Stock images, renders, and pictures pulled from your own website are the fastest route to a rejected appeal.

The reinstatement request wording

Keep it factual and short. Name the cause, state the fix, list the evidence.

Business name: [exact name as it appears on signage]
Address: [full address as registered]
Profile: [link to the profile or the Place ID if you have it]

Cause of suspension, as we understand it:
Our profile name previously included service keywords that were not part of
our real world business name. This did not comply with the business name
guidelines.

What we have corrected:
The profile name is now "[real name]", which matches our signage, our
business registration, and our website. No other fields were changed.

Evidence attached:
1. State business registration showing "[real name]" at [address]
2. Utility bill dated [date] at [address]
3. Photograph of exterior signage showing "[real name]" and the street number
4. Lease agreement for [address], term [dates]

We have operated at this address since [year]. We are requesting
reinstatement of the profile.

Notice what is absent: no apology, no explanation of how important Google is to your business, no mention of lost revenue. The reviewer is checking facts, not weighing hardship.

How long does reinstatement take?

Expect days rather than hours, and sometimes weeks for a complex case or a high risk category. You will get an email. If you are rejected, you can appeal again, but only submit again when you have something new: a cause you had not identified, or evidence you did not include. Resubmitting the same request produces the same answer.

What to do while you wait

Do not create a new profile. A duplicate profile at the same address is itself a suspension cause and it will complicate the reinstatement you are already waiting on.

Do make sure everything else pointing at your business is consistent while you have the time: the name, address, and phone number on your website, your Bing listing, Apple Maps, Yelp, and your major directory citations. Inconsistency across those is not what got you suspended, but it is one of the things a reviewer can look at, and fixing it costs nothing while you are stuck waiting.
